Metal or Wood Baseball Bats

Metal baseball bats significantly outperformed wooden baseball bats according to a recent study by a group of Brown University bioengineers, confirming a belief widely held by players and coaches alike. The average speed of a baseball off the fastest baseball bat, a metal bat model, was 93.3 miles per hour; the average off the slowest baseball bat, a wooden bat model, was 86.1 mik. Only two percent of hits made with wooden bats exceeded one hundred miles per hour, while thirty seven percent of the hits with the fastest metal bat were more than one hundred miles per hour, according to Joseph J. Crisco, associate professor of Orthopaedics at the Brown Medical School. The findings were published in the October 2002 issue of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
